England is famous for its wonderful cathedrals, built over many centuries and an enduring symbol of the strength of the people and country. Emsworth is close to three outstanding examples: Chichester, Portsmouth and Winchester. All very different styles, but all surrounded by thriving cities. Chichester Cathedral is over 900 years old, with architecture from every century, including 20th century textiles and art. Portsmouth Cathedral started as a parish church in the 12th century, and finally completed its transformation into a cathedral in the late 20th century. Winchester Cathedral has been in the same site since the 7th century, although the present building began in 1073. In danger of sinking in mud, it was save by the Winchester diver, who is commemorated inside the precincts. All three cathedrals offer tours and events all year round, with free entry to Chichester and Portsmouth.
